Writing Better Character DescriptionWriting Better Character Description
by Michael Bjork
We writers have a particularly tough job: bringing nonexistent people (our characters) to life in our readers’ imaginations. While it’s never easy, we usually accomplish this magic by writing each character with two qualities in mind:
1) Their personality
2) Their physical appearance
Personality is usually expressed through characterization, and appearance through physical description. Admittedly, that doesn't sound so complicated.
But there are two things I’ll suggest today: first, that description needs to do more than just craft appearance, and second, it’s good characterization, more than anything, that’s the key to conjuring vivid characters.
Let’s take a look at the following example.
1) When I entered Mr. Smith's office, he stood from his desk and smiled. He had a big nose, brown eyes, and short, blond hair. He wore a dark suit. I shook his hand.
Regarding personal style. To anyone who is obsessively busy trying to find a style unique to them; don't. It seems to have become some sort of trend nowadays on dA, trying to "find a style", when really it is something quite ridiculous to be doing.
If you compare it to handwriting, it's like worrying about how to make every single letter of the alphabet both beautiful and unique to you when your spelling and grammar leave a lot to be desired, while they are really the most important things to learn first. Sure having a pretty style to look at is nice, just like having a beautiful handwriting. But if all of your other artistic knowledge is falling behind, much like your spelling and grammar, the result will still be unattractive and your art will not reach the viewer in the way that you intended.
So in short, focus on getting better, on gathering knowledge, experience, and practicing, not on finding your own style. Style will happen automatically. Not to mention the fact that if you're a good and experienced eno

Photography, a beginners GuidePHOTOGRAPHY, A BEGINNERS GUIDE
After a recent pool i had, it seems like people miss more tutorials and guides to photography.
So i am gonna give it my best and make this easy and hopefully helpful.
No absolute answer to everything, but things from my point of view, including some facts.
Advanced facts that sounds sexy will not be included here, Mostly because you don`t need that information to take great photos.
But i will give you url to all the major subjects so that you can read in-depth about them.
First things first, you gonna need a camera, the question on everyones lips is; What camera should i get?
Whats with the freaking megapixels? what is a dslr?
A digital camera/Point and shoot, does not give you the opportunity to change lenses.
Meaning, that the zoom and usability of the lens is as it is.
That does not make it horrible, but for photographers who work with Macro and wildlife photography, that requires a zoom and a magnification that a point-and-shoot c

Finding your style in photographyLast week I did a poll on what subject you would be most interested to hear my opinion about. The majority wanted to know on "Finding your own style" (http://gilad.deviantart.com/journal/poll/264778/). Here are some pointers on that.
Photography has been here for a very long time. Every category in photography already been tried, most places have been photographed, portraits have been done, special techniques, weather... So what do we still find exiting and unique?
The answer is not in "what's being said", rather in "the way we say it". It's not the subject of the photo, rather the way we take it, show it, make our own definition of it. If you group 20 photographers in one scene, all having the same cameras, you will still get many different photos. On the other hand, you can tell which photo is who's just by looking at a photo - recognize the style. I have to say that finding your style is not a process you are aware to. It happens while doing photogra
Women Who Won't Leave Home without a Camera! In observation of International Women's Week on dA, we are celebrating women as they attempt to realize their potentials in their respective fields of expertise and art. I will not attempt to talk about female photographers, for I do not differentiate between the great photography of men and women. Instead, I would like to celebrate and honor the careers of women who who rose to the top of their game, sometimes against the considerable odds of the times. You can easily locate a source online to read summaries of these women's careers, so rather than giving an account of their careers here, I am going to share a few details (that I found interesting) about the lives of these extraordinary women.
I'm also including a patchwork of thumbs from some of the women of dA who carry cameras with them regularly. Hope you enjoy!
